THEIR DISPLEASURE

The cats are grumpy from the heat They’re plain miserable Yowling and hissing Batting each other in the head. Skulking around demanding That the humans alter the situation As if we were weather gods And could make it October With the wave of a hand. They are both, alternately, camped out Lying on the cool hardwood floor Faces scrunched up and sour Tails flipping. I give them treats Hoping to improve their moods They are reluctantly grateful Taking dainty bites Without much enthusiasm. Usually dear, They are currently devilish Giving me the stink eye Wrapped in fur. They twist and turn like lions On the savanna Extending themselves fully Appearing fearsome. If not for their small size, I might be frightened Of becoming a meal To quench their displeasure. ©2026 Stephanie M. Vargo

The ending was a great twist, the reminder that once they were king of the jungle and still expect royal treatment.
