The Forbidden Word
one million certainties

THE FORBIDDEN WORD What path is this I dare to walk With hidden corners and trap doors Reaching down, there is no floor To break the fall to save my bones? Paradise, a bank of clouds, A misty bed at horizon’s end Lures fantastic imaginings To construct jeweled castles out of dreams. An antidote to earthly woe, An aphrodisiac mixed with care I slip into a boundless trance From which I wrestle to awake Before desire has finally fled. The promises of faith remain From childhood teachings long ago Good and evil hold no sway When considering the last “amen.” Steps falter, exhaustion’s curse Obscures the effort, the way is steep, How much easier to descend With gravity a constant friend? The shimmer dances in my eyes To entertain such nothingness One million certainties converge When " impossible" is a forbidden word. © 2025 Stephanie M. Vargo

This is beautifully written, the imagery and tension pull you right in. I loved the way you explored possibility and doubt together.
This spoke of unwavering faith, even in the face of suffering. Beautifully written, Stephanie.
