Make a Great Noise
instead of suffering
MAKE A GREAT NOISE I split the air with a high pitched wail The trees quiver and quake As I empty my longing into the sky Putting out my call to beings that crawl Summoning those with wings Waking those that burrow in the ground. I announce my presence to the rivers, Forlorn in the mountains I bathe in the icy waterfall Under the evening sky. The moon bears witness To my overture An invitation for all creatures To convene under the stars. I request that the fireflies Illuminate the path, Rising and falling with the breezes, They sparkle like jewels adorning the night. My mood is apprehensive As I gather nature’s inhabitants around This is the first time I have reached out To dispel my desolation After wandering the woods For so long. I have guarded my silence Isolated in the overgrown fields Denying companions Keeping my secrets close to my heart. There comes a time when the secrets Take a toll and the loneliness burns There comes a time when solitude turns bitter There comes a time when one should Make a great noise Instead of suffering. ©2026 Stephanie M. sometimes making a great noise can feel like freedom
I was struck by the movement from silence to voice. Sometimes there really comes a moment when staying alone with what we carry inside hurts more than letting it out.
