Dreamless Sleep

DREAMLESS SLEEP

Living nearer to the grave I feel the chill of endless rest Oblivion calls my name From beyond a door With no exit. Soon my heart will cease to beat A final sigh escape my lips Tired eyes will close at last Dreamless, I will go to sleep. Memories evanesce and fade Emotions linger in the dirt My spirit endures for awhile Reluctant to descend to earth. I cannot stop the wheel that turns With passages of death and birth The cycle written in the stars The going under with the tide. Acceptance comes from loving life With every season there is joy The falling rain, the rising moon, Bring beauty to the journey home. The mystery of dust to dust Concealed by the pulse of time Unravels as you face the end Returning to the soil and roots. On cloudless nights, lost in thought I imagine riding on the wind Insubstantial like the mist A force of nature roaming free. Shaking off my physical bond Without the burdens shackling me I’m content to find abiding peace In the bosom of eternity. © 2026 Stephanie M. Vargo

I was thinking the other day… do you ever remember falling asleep? Found comfort in that ❤️
I found a gentle peace in these lines. Rather than making death the destination, the poem lets it become part of a larger rhythm where every season, every breath, and every return belongs to the same unfolding. Thank you for such a thoughtful reflection.
