Crying Alone
a lullaby

CRYING ALONE One cigarette is never enough To quell the urge for more Draining coffee from a cup Won’t calm your trembling soul. You can pray, count to ten Clear your racing mind When the big fears get you late at night There’s nothing more to do. Eyes as wide as saucers Can’t be made to close The tricks you learned in therapy Only multiply your woes. The music that you’re playing Might as well be the blues It conjures all your sorrow The last place you should go. You hate to cry alone Some whisky would be good The lady of the evening Is Johnnie Walker Black. Another cigarette A slow sip from the glass Bonnie Raitt singing sweet Will open up your heart. Sometimes it gets like this You can’t escape yourself You rock yourself to sleep As the morning sun comes up. ©2026 Stephanie M. Vargo

Beautiful written with an ache we've all felt when we needed something late at night.
